Moore Hall Center for Inclusive Excellence - Providence College  Providence, RI

Until 2017, a 1950’s building in the center of Providence College's campus served as home to the departments of business and psychology and the Center for the Development of Western Civilization, when our firm effected a transformation to a collaborative space dedicated to the arts, culture and social justice. The design team held intensive meetings with a variety of stakeholders to understand the college’s goal to build on diversity and academic excellence. After hearing from students, faculty and administrators, we distilled their diverse interests into a program for a functional multipurpose space that made use of existing materials and finishes. The spaces were complimented by the work of artists, including a large mural created by Philadelphia artist Betsy Casañas.

The community center consists of lounges, a dance studio, café, collaboration rooms, offices and an active learning classroom. Some of the original building ele-ments such as the masonry were uncovered to bring warmth to a structure which was originally “institutional” in nature. Operating with a tight budget, our firm introduced color and texture to breathe life into a building designed with function in mind.  Through these modifications, the Center for Inclusive Excellence has become a locus for a variety of formal and informal activities and has defined itself as a welcoming space for students, staff, and faculty alike.
