Fall River Waterworks  Fall River, MA

After decades of neglect, the nearly 140 year-old Pumping Station at the Fall River Water Works is undergoing adaptive reuse. Situated on the vast North Watuppa Pond, the building has taken the brunt of storms and damaging wind resulting in serious roof leaks and a compromised structural system.

Our design team collaborated to devise and implement a stabilization solution to ensure the building would remain standing for another century. This involved construction of a secondary structural system using an existing crane rail within the building to relieve the massive double truss roof system from its bearing load and embedment within granite masonry walls where water infiltration had deteriorated the truss ends. Work also included restoration of the wood entablature and a massive wood window and hazardous materials abatement.
